The word for today

Isandla siyageza esinye. One hand washes the other.

The verse

And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left. Isaiah 30:21, King James Version.

The reading

Isaiah heard the word behind him, not in front of him. Most of us meet it late, on the walk back, after the decision is already made. The elders kept a word for the same thing: isandla siyageza esinye, one hand washes the other. The left hand cannot make itself clean alone. Neither can you. Today will place you on both sides of that sentence. Somebody needs a pair of hands and you have them. Later you will need help you have not asked for. Ask. This road is walked in company. Before the day gets loud, name one person you will help, and one thing you will let another person help you with.

Carry this

Help one person without being asked, and ask for one thing before the day ends.

Source of the proverb

The proverb is isiZulu. It carries a citation in the Impande proverb registry: SA Sayings, Zulu proverbs index, retrieved 24 August 2026, where it also appears as isandla siyahlamba esinye. The verse is King James Version, public domain.

And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left. Isaiah 30:21, King James Version.

The reading

Carry this

The word for today

Indlela yangaphambili iyanyibilika. The way ahead slides as you walk.

The verse

But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. Isaiah 40:31, King James Version.

The reading

Isaiah wrote to people who had walked so long that their strength was gone. The promise he gave them was not a shortcut. Renewal takes the night. Twenty-six centuries later, people still leave home before the light and take the same road back in the dark. Waiting is part of the walk, never a gap between two parts of it. The proverb says the way ahead slides as you walk: the path you see is not the path you step on, and the clearing is made by walking. So make it. Most days will not be the eagle days. Most days you put one foot down and then the other, and that is the victory the verse names. Strength for today comes back. It is renewed, not spent.

Carry this

Put one foot down, then the other. Strength for today is renewed, not spent.

Source of the proverb

The proverb is isiXhosa. Our record holds it with the source noted as Xhosa oral tradition, and names a canonical published source as still pending confirmation. It is published here with that gap stated rather than filled.

The word for today

Umntu ngumntu ngabantu. A person is a person through other people.

The reading

The morning is a country with a quiet flag. Before the day speaks its loud names at you, it asks a small question: who walked with you while the streets were empty, who sat with you when the work was undone, whose name do you carry without knowing. Today is a day to find those people in your mind and put them down gently, one at a time. The day that opens around them will not be loud. It will have a floor under it. Today is a day for the people who held you before the day was loud. The hands that steadied you, the friend who came round without a reason, the older one who saw something in you before you saw it in yourself. One of them will come to mind today, and one of them may want you today. Be there the way they were there. That is the whole work.

Carry this

I am a person through other people. Today I will name one of them, out loud. I will finish one small thing I set down so I can show up clean for the one who needs me. I will hold the door for the day without naming it. The word for today is older than I am: a person is a person through other people. I take that with me.

The reading

Wees daar soos hulle vir jou was. Dit is die hele werk.

Carry this

The word for today

Umuntu osemzini, uyawa. A person who stands alone does not last.

The reading

The day comes with a question about company. A hut carries its thatch because every strand is tied to the strand beside it. Ask who holds you, not who owes you or who happens to be near because the road put them there. Ask who would come if you sent word before the sun was high. That short list is the shape of your morning. Where the list runs thin, the day asks you to tie one new knot. Today brings the pull to stand on your own and the small cost of it. You will manage something alone that would have taken half the time with another pair of hands. You will keep a worry in one pocket and leave it there. The Zulu elders say that the person who stands alone does not last. They say it with care, the way you warn someone you would rather not lose. If you are carrying something today, name it to one person. If you know someone who is carrying something, make it easy for them to set it down next to you.

Carry this

I last when someone stands with me. Today I will tell one person the size of my load. I will take the help that is offered instead of refusing it out of habit. I will answer when someone reaches for me, and I will not call that weakness. Umuntu osemzini, uyawa. The one who stands alone does not last. I will not stand alone today.

The word for today

Ke motho ka batho. I am a person through other people.

The reading

Wednesday opens with a small ledger of exchanges. Botho does not live in the large gestures. It lives in how you handle the ordinary ones: the person who counts your change, the driver who waits while you cross, the colleague who carries blame for something you both did. Ke motho ka batho. A person is a person through people. Today holds up a mirror made of other faces. Watch how you greet before you watch how you perform. Where you find yourself short with someone who cannot answer back, that is the place the day is pointing at. Today brings you people, and it brings the choice of how you meet them. Expect one exchange where you are tired and the other person is slow, and the shape of the day will quietly hang on what you do next. Expect one moment where someone needs something you can give cheaply, and you will feel the pull to hold back. The Sesotho word for today says humanity is not a possession. It is a practice, and it is practised in public: at the till, at the gate, in the group chat. You will not be tested on your best day. You will be tested on Wednesday.

Carry this

I am a person through people. Today I will greet first and mean it. I will give the person in front of me the full attention I would want at the end of a long shift. I will keep my voice level when the day runs late and my patience runs short. Where I am treated badly I will still answer as a person, because Ke motho ka batho does not depend on how the other person behaves. It describes what I am. I will carry that word into the day and let it shape three small decisions before sunset.

The word for today

Ke motho ka batho. I am a person through other people.

The reading

Carry this

The word for today

Ubuntu umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu. Ubuntu, a person is a person through other people.

The reading

Thursday asks a root question. Ubuntu umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu says a person is a person through other people, and the isiZulu word ubuntu carries the whole thought inside it: the self is not a free-standing thing. Ask what you are made of, and the answer is not your own achievement. It is your mother's patience, a teacher's correction, a friend who kept a promise when keeping it was inconvenient. A seed does not choose the soil it lands in. It chooses whether to root or to dry out. That is the choice Thursday puts in front of you. Today brings the pull toward the surface: your patience, your schedule, your plans. Something small will test you, a delay, a message that arrives at the wrong moment, a task that lands on the wrong desk. The day will measure how you answer and where the answer comes from. Answering from the surface costs nothing and lasts nothing. People will also come to you today, one of them needing you to be steady. Thursday is not a day for big gestures. It is a day for the roots to show in small, ordinary acts.

Carry this

I am a person through people. Today I will answer from the root and not from the moment. When the day pulls at my patience I will take one breath before I speak. I will keep the promise I made even now that it has become inconvenient. I will remember the people who carried me to this day, and I will name one of them out loud. I will make three small decisions today that a rooted person would make, and I will hold the word in my mouth until sunset.

The word for today

A person with Ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good. Archbishop Desmond Tutu's gloss on Ubuntu.

The reading

Friday asks you to notice where you measure yourself against other people, and to put the scale down. The Ubuntu canon says a person with Ubuntu is glad for another's good without weighing it against their own. A week of work has done its measuring quietly all week, and today is the day to stop. Today brings the plain chance to be glad about somebody else, with no conditions attached. A colleague lands the work you wanted. A friend turns out to be better at the thing than you are. Someone starts again after a bad week. None of it asks anything of you except that you do not shrink from it, and do not talk yourself out of it either.

Carry this

Tell one person today that you saw what they did. Do it before you find a reason to wait. When you see someone doing well, open your door wider. Do not argue that you earned it too. Friday does not mind who is thriving.

The word for today

I am because we are. The Ubuntu canon, in English.

The reading

Saturday asks you to count the people you belong with before you count what you got done this week. The Ubuntu canon in English is short: I am because we are. It lands harder at the end of a week, when the work is finished and nobody is keeping score except you. Today brings the weekend, and with it a chance to be somewhere you are not usually needed. A visit that runs long because nobody wants to leave. A phone call with no reason attached to it. Someone who has been holding a place for you and would like to know whether you still want it. Belonging is easy on paper and takes practice in a room.

Carry this

Send the message today. Say the thank you out loud. Sit with the people who came before you and ask them one thing you have never asked. Saturday is short, and the people in it are not in a hurry either.

The word for today

'n Boer maak 'n plan. A farmer makes a plan.

The reading

Sunday asks where your plan meets the road. A farmer makes a plan, but the veld does not read your lines on the map. Rain comes when it will, not when the ledger says it should. The plan is not the thing; the thing is what you do when the plan fails. Today is a day for the next small step, not the perfect scheme. Today brings the test between intention and soil. Your schedule may shake, your tools may fail, your market may shift. Something small will ask whether you bend or break: a gate that sticks, a voice lost on a bad line, a promise that needs remaking. The day will not measure your plan. It will measure what you do next, when the plan hits the dust.

Carry this

I am someone who makes a next plan. When the road closes, I will look for the track. I will take the step before I feel ready, then the one after that. I will not stand still and blame the day. I will trust my hands, my head, and the road that opens as I walk it. Today I will find the way through by taking the next small step.

'n Boer maak 'n plan. A farmer makes a plan.

The reading

Carry this

The word for today

Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu. A person is a person through other people.

The reading

Monday asks you to notice the people who made your day possible before you ask what your day will ask of you. The Ubuntu canon holds that a person is a person through other people, and Monday is the day to feel the weight of that claim rather than only recite it. Today brings the people who usually go unnamed. A driver who waited, a colleague who covered your shift, a friend who checked twice, a child who asked a question that stayed with you all day. None of them needed a ceremony. They were simply there, and the ordinary machinery of your life kept turning because of them.

Carry this

Name one person you owe a thank you today, and say it out loud. Send the message you have been drafting in your head. Make room for the person who is waiting outside your door. Monday is a poor day for grand gestures and a good day for small ones.

The word for today

Indlela inamhla aphindwa mntu. No person walks the same path twice.

The reading

Tuesday asks you to walk today's path without yesterday's steps. The road is familiar, but you are not the same traveler who walked it before. Each dawn offers a clean slate where old footprints fade and new possibilities emerge. Today brings the quiet realization that you cannot retrace yesterday's journey exactly. The landscape may look similar, but your perspective has shifted. What challenged you yesterday may now invite curiosity. What exhausted you yesterday might now spark renewed energy. The day invites you to meet the familiar with fresh eyes.

Carry this

Walk today's path as if for the first time. Notice what you missed yesterday. Allow yourself to respond differently to familiar situations. Leave yesterday's assumptions at the threshold. Step forward with openness to what this unique day reveals.

The word for today

Umntu ngumntu ngabantu. A person is a person through other people.

The reading

Wednesday arrives in the middle of things, not at either end of them. Whatever you started is half done by now, and whatever you promised has a person waiting on it. Today puts you back in the room with the people whose day changes shape when you are not there. Not a grand repair. A hand on one end of something heavy while the other end is held by somebody else. Today brings the discovery that your strength has a seam in it, and the seam is where other people hold. Work that looked like yours alone turns out to have been carried quietly by somebody. Name them. Ask for the hand you need before the weight drops on both of you. Take the help without keeping score, because the score was never the point.

Carry this

Say the thing out loud today: I need help with this. Ask one person for one specific thing, and give one person the thing they asked of you. Stand where the load is shared, not where it is admired. The word is old and it is not decoration. A person is a person through other people, and today you let that be practical.

The word for today

Eendrag maak mag. Unity makes strength.

The reading

Thursday lands four days into the week, when the first push is spent and the last stretch is still ahead. Whatever you have carried alone since the week opened has begun to show its weight. Today the word comes from Afrikaans: eendrag maak mag, unity makes strength. It was struck on a republic's coins and carried on its shield. The claim is modest and it holds. One strand of rope snaps under a load that a braided rope carries without complaint. Look at what you are holding today. Some of it was never meant to rest on one hand. Today brings a small test of joining. Someone will offer to take half of something you assumed was yours to finish. A meeting will go better if you let another voice carry the part you usually carry. You may feel the pull to prove you can manage alone, and that pull is worth noticing. Strength that refuses company runs out on a Thursday and takes the weekend to recover. Accept the second pair of hands. Add yours where somebody is short. The work finishes either way. The difference is who is still standing when it does.

Carry this

Pick one thing you are carrying by yourself and hand part of it to a person you can name. Say what you need in plain words and say when you need it. Then take one thing off somebody who has stayed quiet about their load. Do this before the day closes. Eendrag maak mag is not a slogan for a speech. It describes what happens when two people agree on the same weight. Stand where the work is shared, and let your name be one of several on it.

Afrikaans Donderdag, 22 Oktober 2026

The word for today

Eendrag maak mag. Unity makes strength.

The reading

Sit joune by waar iemand kortkom.

Carry this

What is signed, and what is not

No language in this archive carries a reviewer signature yet. Every entry was drafted by the Impande editorial team and is waiting for a fluent speaker of that language to read it and sign it.

An unsigned language never reaches a paying reader, because the sender refuses it. The drafts stay visible here so the record is open rather than hidden.

English, isiZulu, isiXhosa and Afrikaans are the four languages this site publishes. The reading is written first in isiZulu or isiXhosa and carried into the others.
